My first five monsters for TinyTim, including the sketches. I have one more step that I don't show here... My process is: sketch -> greyscale rendering (to work out value relationships) -> adding color by using multiply/color/color dodge/soft light layers.

Me too! I wish I'd saved the greyscale step - I'll do that in the future. ;)

Awesome work! I really like your designs. You have progressed a lot and I'm envious of what you're doing!

Thanks! Yeah, I decided to get serious about my art as a career a couple of years ago (right wen I was leaving for Korea the second time - one of my friends was working at Blur Studios and she gave me a tour with a *hint hint*youshouldbedoingthis*nudge nudge* when we hit the concept art loft. So I worked on my art and read the book "Wishcraft" by Barbara Sher (circa 1980's), which was surprisingly helpful in getting my aspirations rounded up into a plan of success. And moving to Silicon Valley has been awesome in the connection-making department. I think it cut the time it took me to break into the industry in half (though I'm not completely 'in' imho). Now, if only I could snag a staff artist position... >:)

How long did it take you from to get the right portfolio made?

It's tough to say, because I had to spend some time rebuilding my atrophied artistic muscle with figure-drawing and other basics that we did in school... but I'd say after I got to a decent life drawing level it took 7 months to a year? Mainly because I had to re-do my website as well, and my resume. It could take a lot shorter if you really focus on one area (character design, creature design, background design, etc.) - which is basically what you're supposed to do. I lucked into being in the right place at the right time (with just enough talent shown on my website) for my internship, and after having a game under my belt (even a small mobile game) I've had a lot more confidence to go after art jobs on places like O-desk.

Another thing to check into is if there are any hackathons or game jams happening near you - I joined in on the Global Game Jam this year, and it was a great experience. It helps you to jump in and get a game done (hopefully). If your group is good at getting together after the event and polishing you could have a full game for your portfolio. =D

That being said, my current creature design contract is mostly based on a few creature designs that I had on my website, from what I can tell. And one thing that's worth noting is that it seems that it can make a difference if you're living in a game-company-heavy area (I'm in Silicon Valley, in the Bay Area, which is a huge mobile game company mecca - and if I were to go down to L.A. there are even MORE game companies). I don't know if I would have gotten an internship if I were anywhere else. :/
